The linear barcode on almost every consumer product contains one number, the GTIN. The till uses it to find the product and its price in the store's database. The barcode has no place for a batch or a date: 2D codes add them, and the EAN stays on packs while tills switch over to 2D.В линейном штрихкоде почти на каждом потребительском товаре записан один номер — GTIN. - GS1 prefix: the GS1 member organisation that issued the number. 400–440 is GS1 Germany, 500–509 GS1 UK, 590 GS1 Poland, 840–849 GS1 Spain, 860 GS1 Serbia; 950 is GS1's own range, used in examples. The prefix does not show where the product was made.

- GS1 Company Prefix: the GS1 prefix plus the company's digits, licensed to the brand owner. A company that needs to number many products gets a shorter prefix and more digits for its items.

- Item reference: the brand gives one to each product and each pack size.

- Check digit: calculated from the other twelve, so a till can tell a misread code from a valid one.

Multiply the digits by 3 and 1 in turn, starting with 3 at the right end, and add the results. The check digit is what is missing to the next multiple of ten. The same rule works for GTIN-8, GTIN-12, GTIN-13, GTIN-14 and the 18-digit SSCC.Цифры умножают по очереди на 3 и на 1, начиная с 3 на правом конце, и складывают. Numbers starting with 02 or 20–29 are restricted circulation numbers. They are valid only inside one country or one retailer, and the national GS1 office or the retailer decides what the digits mean. On weighed goods they usually hold the item and its weight or price. Here is a label from a self-service scale in a Serbian supermarket.Номера, которые начинаются с 02 или 20–29, — номера ограниченного обращения. The till reads the item and the weight; the price per kilo comes from the store's database. The packing date is printed on the label as text, and the till does not read it, so a label printed yesterday scans the same as one printed today. Other layouts hold the price in place of the weight or add a check digit for the price; the layout differs by country and by retailer. In the US and Canada, UPC numbers starting with 2 serve the same purpose.Касса читает товар и массу, а цену за килограмм берёт из базы магазина. With a date in the code, the till can refuse an old label.
