A GS1 Digital Link is a web address with GS1 data in it: the product number (GTIN) and, when needed, the batch, the serial number and the expiry date. https://id.gs1.org: The domain of the resolver, the web service that opens the right page. id.gs1.org belongs to GS1. A brand can use its own domain: Beiersdorf prints qr.8x4.de on 8x4 deodorant. A shorter domain gives a smaller QR code.
/01/09506000134352: The key: 01 is the Application Identifier (AI) for the GTIN, the GTIN follows in 14 digits. A 13-digit EAN gets a leading zero: 9506000134352 is written as 09506000134352. A GS1 Digital Link for a product always has this part.
/10/AB1234: Batch or lot, AI 10, up to 20 characters.
/21/7G4K9P2XQ5: Serial number, AI 21, up to 20 characters. With a serial number every pack has its own address.
?17=271231: Expiry date, AI 17, in the form YYMMDD: 31 December 2027. Dates, weight and price go after the question mark.

Three rules for writing the addressТри правила записи адресаDrei Regeln für die Adresse

In the path, the order after the GTIN is fixed: the product variant (22), then the batch (10), then the serial number (21). Any of them can be left out; the order of the rest stays.
Other data goes into the query string after "?", pairs joined with "&": ?17=271231&3103=000755.
Characters with a special meaning in a web address are percent-encoded: batch AB/12 is written as AB%2F12.

The till takes the weight and the price from the code and blocks the sale after the expiry date. The resolver on that domain picks the page by the brand's rules: product information, a recall notice for this batch, instructions or the Digital Product Passport. A 2D-ready scanner decodes the QR, and the till software takes the GTIN, the dates, the weight and the price from the path and the query string. A resolver can hold several links for one code. Each link has a type from the GS1 Web Vocabulary, for example gs1:pip (product information page), gs1:recallStatus, gs1:sustainabilityInfo, gs1:instructions and gs1:epil (patient leaflet). An app asks for one type by adding ?linkType=gs1:recallStatus to the address. For the same data, a QR with a Digital Link needs more modules than a GS1 DataMatrix, because the address adds the domain and the slashes. GTIN, batch, serial number and expiry from the third example take a QR of 33 × 33 modules; the same data in a GS1 DataMatrix takes 22 × 22.
