Mercadona puts GS1 Digital Link QR codes on fixed- and variable-weight fresh packs: meat, fish, fruit trays. Its head of coding told an AECOC event that all of its variable-weight meat carries the code. Weight and use-by date are encoded in the code, so the weigh-price labeller prints different data on every pack, and one bad print gives the till a wrong price and a wrong date at once. On the lines I have seen, every code is graded on the line before the pack goes into the crate.
